Meet the GSAE Leadership Team:

Walt Mize

Bio

Galen Doughty

  • I was born in Pullman, WA in 1953, and then immediately my parents moved to Long Beach, WA where I grew up until the 7th grade. We then moved to Sumner, near Tacoma, where I graduated from Sumner High School in 1971. I went on to Whitworth College (now Whitworth University), graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in May of 1975. That same month I married my wife Betty and we moved to Pasadena, California where I began Fuller Theological Seminary. I graduated from Fuller in 1978 with my M.Div. I was ordained in the Presbyterian Church USA and began my ministry as an Associate Pastor at Marine View Presbyterian Church in Northeast Tacoma. We stayed at Marine View for 6 years and both our daughters were born while at Marine View. In 1984 we moved to Richland, WA where I was solo Pastor at Meadow Springs Presbyterian Church for 8 years until we moved to Spokane in 1993. I came back on staff as Associate Pastor at Manito Presbyterian on South Hill until November of 2001 when we left Manito to begin Southside Christian Church. In 2004 I became one of the Teaching Pastors at Southside and continue in that role today.
I have two grown daughters, Laura and Sara. Laura teaches high school in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sara is currently in Germany where she works for Young Life International with American military teens. She will return to Spokane this summer to get married then she and her new husband Adam will live in Michigan.
I love sports, especially the Seahawks, and listening to music of all kinds but my favorite is classical. I enjoy backpacking and I get to lead a men’s backpack trip each summer that is one of the highlights of every summer. I love to read, especially science fiction and fantasy and J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis are my favorite authors.
The book that has impacted me the most over the last several years is The Present Future by Reggie McNeal. It outlines the changes in our culture and how the church must respond to them. The people that have impacted me the most in my life are my parents and especially my father, who loved the Lord and modeled for me what a godly man and husband was like. Dr. Glenn Barker of Fuller Seminary was the professor that shaped my thinking and theology more than anyone else during my seminary years. He too has had a lasting impact on my life.
